Crisis Management Affecting Institutions of Higher Education: A Collaborative (MGT-361) (MGT361)

This course trains higher education campus and community members, and others involved in crisis management duties and responsibilities to effectively manage a crisis by applying a whole community approach. Risk management strategies, effective crisis communication, and a series of well-developed plans as described in the National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) are emphasized. The course utilizes case studies and activities to aid participants in recognizing potential gaps in their current crisis management program and concludes with a practical application, simulated role-play exercise.

  • Identify key concepts of crisis evolution as it affects institutions of higher education.
  • Articulate challenges with establishing and maintaining stakeholder relationships given political, social, legal, and regulatory issues impacting institutions of higher education.
  • Model prevention and protection strategies to build a resilient community.
  • Explain risk as it relates to the whole community.
  • Employ mitigation strategies to build a resilient community.
  • Distill information and develop crisis messaging.
  • Relate the Incident Command System (ICS) to institutions of higher education and recognize the role of Emergency Operations Centers (EOC) in campus crisis management.
  • Articulate issues related to recovery from incidents at institutions of higher education.
  • Reason through a simulated incident at an Institution of Higher Education by utilizing the principles and concepts provided in the course.
