The participant will be given an overview of the hazards and threats of anhydrous ammonia, including health risks and potential facility impacts. The session will cover medical management for exposures, selection of proper PPE, and proven mitigation tactics and strategies to reduce risk. We will also review key response considerations to ensure safe and effective decision-making during an incident.
Following the classroom session, participants will transition to the drill area for a live release field exercise, where they will experience and evaluate both low-level and high-level ammonia exposure scenarios. These hands-on activities will demonstrate the effectiveness of PPE, practice dry decontamination methods using fans and blowers, and apply tarp-and-cover techniques to control vapor movement. This combination of classroom learning and live exercises ensures participants gain practical, real-world skills for recognizing, managing, and responding to ammonia emergencies.
