The State Medical Assistance Team (SMAT) Initial Training Course is required for all SMAT team members. This course is designed to meet guidelines established by the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services for the purpose of ensuring mission readiness, safety and team cohesiveness. Course participants must either be a current member of an SMAT Team or have successful course completion as a requirement prior to joining an SMAT Team. This course includes the following modules include:
Module 0: Introduction
Module1: Overview and History
Module 2: Responder Safety and Health
Module 3: Infection Control
Module4: All Hazards
Module 5: Communications
Module 6: Deployment Readiness
Module 7: Mass Casualty
Module 8: Hazardous Material
Module 9: Base Camp Operations
PLEASE NOTE:
Every participant should dress appropriately for weather conditions and hands on activities during the set-up and take down of SMAT deployment tents. These activities may be inside and/or outside, weather and space dependent. Participants should also consider having appropriate footwear (no open toed shoes) and good fitting gloves to prevent injuries during set-up/take down operations.
