Course Description:
This course is designed to train Floodplain Administrators to effectively use FEMA P-55, Coastal Construction Manual. The course and publication provide a
comprehensive approach to planning, siting, designing, constructing, and maintaining homes in the coastal environment.
Selection Criteria - The primary audience for this course is floodplain managers and building code officials. Engineers and architects are also encouraged to attend.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the basic principles of designing in coastal environments: design premise, design framework, constraints, defining a “successful” building.
- Understanding the differences in design requirements and expected performance between coastal and inland construction.
- Understand the significance and “lessons” of historical events at the coast.
- Describe minimum requirements and “best practices” for coastal construction.
- Identify coastal hazards at potential building sites and identify where to obtain pertinent information.
- Understand the basic principles of retrofitting existing structures as it pertains to dry floodproofing, elevation, and utility protection.
- Understanding substantial Improvement Issues.
