Event Description

American Red Cross Shelter Simulation Scenario (ARC-SHSCEN)

Description
The Shelter Simulation establishes an environment for participants to gain practical experience and refresher knowledge of shelter operations. In this unique learning experience, there are core learning requirements that must be delivered to learners. Regional training leadership can customize the simulation delivery plan to fit the
physical environment, the desired simulation length, and regional priorities. The flexibility of this simulation design enables it to be offered in 4 hours in a classroom or
as a full-day intensive learning activity that engages learners in additional learning objectives. Using the Simulation Roadmap provided, instructors will create a plan to
include all mandatory learning activities along with selected optional activities.
Short videos are included for most simulation topics. Additional simulation activities include group discussions, role plays, and hands-on practice.
This course replaces Shelter Operation Simulation. Anyone who completed the previous version is encouraged to take the new course, but
not required.
Purpose
The Shelter Simulation provides an opportunity for participants to increase their knowledge of working in a shelter and gain confidence in performing various shelter
tasks.
Learning Objectives
The Shelter Simulation provides practical experience on how to conduct the various tasks required to maintain a functioning shelter. It also exposes learners to the
types of situations they may encounter. Three overarching goals have been outlined for the simulation in order to provide the participants with a successful and
productive learning experience:
• Promote teamwork through interactive group activities that
correspond to operating a shelter.
• Reinforce key activities and tasks that are involved in resourcing,
opening, operating and closing a shelter.
• Provide participants with an opportunity to practice their skills and
discuss ways to handle to issues that arise in shelters.
To view learning objectives for each specific activity, facilitators can
reference the Simulation Roadmap.
Audience
  • Volunteers, employees and partners of the Red Cross who want to work in Red Cross shelters
  • Current shelter workers who want to be a shelter manager
