American Red Cross Shelter Supervisor (ARC-SHSUPV)

Description
Shelter Supervisor is a mid-level basic course that introduces the roles, responsibilities, and tasks of shelter supervisors. The course content is based on the
American Red Cross sheltering guidance, which is documented primarily in the Sheltering Standards and Procedures, Operating a Shelter Job Tool, and Concept of
Operations 3.0. There are additional job tools and forms incorporated into this course. All documents are available on The Exchange. Successful completion of this
course is one step in the process of becoming a shelter supervisor; other required courses, shelter experience and a recommendation by the region are additional
criteria. Participants mustattend the entire course to earn a certificate.
Purpose
The purpose of this course is to prepare participants to perform theoperational roles, responsibilities, and tasks of supervisors in a Red Cross Shelter.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Explain sheltering and its principles.
• Explain differences between evacuation and post-disaster shelters.
• Describe the organization of a shelter and DRO.
• Identify types of supervisors.
• Specify roles and responsibilities.
• Describe shelter spaces, layout and supplies needed.
• Improve ability for effectively managing shelter service workers.
• Identify effective communication techniques inside the shelter.
• Explain collecting and reporting information.
• Describe how to serve individual client needs.
• Emphasize collaboration with partners.
Audience
Employees, volunteers, and partners of the Red Cross who work as Supervisors in Red Cross shelters.
