Event Description

Resources for Building Resilience & Psychological CPR (NC-8-010)

In a world where things like burnout, toxic stress, and traumatic experiences are becoming more prevalent, especially in the helping professions and first responder community, individuals need simple strategies for protecting and enhancing their resilience, in addition to preventing the long-term impacts of these types of exposures. In this transformative two-day training participants will learn about their own neurobiology so that they can better understand and manage their own experiences related to burnout, toxic stress, and trauma. In day one of the training, we will discuss the way that our nervous systems are designed for survival and how that influences our responses to different environments, relationships and experiences. We will learn how trauma impacts our brains, bodies and ability to function. We will also examine the topic of resilience while we learn and practice 10 simple strategies for protecting and enhancing our own resilience and the resilience of those we serve. These simple strategies will empower individuals to know how to create positive feelings and sensations inside their bodies which can have a positive impact on their distress
tolerance and overall mood. In day two of the training, participants will learn Psychological CPR, which is a form of psychological first aid that can be used in the days and weeks after a crisis, natural disaster, or other critical incident to reduce distress symptoms associated with the
traumatic experiences. Participants will learn how to define psychological first aid and why Psychological CPR is different than therapy; this will include the limitations to Psychological CPR and instructions on how to support someone in the event you have to
discontinue Psychological CPR. Psychological CPR has been shown to decrease how vivid a recent event feels as well as the associated disturbance through the use of self-tapping, which is a form of bilateral stimulation. This is a unique intervention because unlike other forms of intervention that require you to talk about the incident, this does not require participants to have discussions about their experience in order to feel better. Instead, this protocol encourages the individual to focus on their internal experience in order to create relief and therefore allows the individual to reconnect with the present moment and move the recent traumatic experience to a more adaptive resolution.
Participant outcomes/learning objectives

Day 1:
o Participants will learn how our neurobiology was designed to promote survival and explore how exposure to trauma and chronic stress can impact
our brains, bodies and ability to function.
o Participants will learn about the difference between coping and regulation and how regulating can impact their window of tolerance and allow them to reprogram their nervous system away from depleting mood states like anxiety and depression.
o Participants will learn and practice 10 simple exercises/interventions they can implement to prevent burnout in addition to increasing happiness and
well-being for themselves, their peers, and those they serve. Participant outcomes/learning objectives

Day 2:
o Participants will learn why Psychological CPR is considered psychological first aid and not therapy
o Participants will learn and be able to identify the limitations of Psychological CPR, including when to discontinue the use of these protocols
o Participants will learn and practice 1 scripted intervention for psychological first aid that can be used to reduce disturbance and prevent long-term impacts of recent traumas/critical incidents with their peers and those they serve
