Peer Support Programs give Law Enforcement personnel the opportunity to confidentially discuss their personal and professional challenges with trained co-workers who understand and want to help. Through listening, understanding, and providing appropriate referrals. Peer Support Programs serve proactively as an early-warning detection system to help individuals manage their personal problems. This two-day training focuses on developing skills for active listening, recognizing, and assessing officers’ problems, determining the need for referral to professionals, and selecting the proper resource to provide professional assistance. Training also covers problem-solving techniques, dealing with officer involved shootings, dealing with injury and death, addressing alcohol and prescription drug addiction, and responding to relationship problems. The training emphasizes that peer support personnel are not therapists and must know their limits as to what they can offer, do, and provide professional resources. Students will learn about caring for themselves, compassion fatigue/secondary trauma and confidentiality. The class includes role playing exercises and a written test.
