Lesson Purpose:
The Land Search Field Team Leader (LSFTL) is the foundation for Crew leadership response to a lost or missing person incident including ground search for a missing aircraft. This class provides experience, leadership, and planning considerations for first responders not already governed by a training guideline for response to persons in distress. ASTM Standard Guide for Training of a Land Search Team Leader (STL) F2685-14 is the guide for this class. This course is designed to be a 54 hours full immersion training course with the students living in a field environment for the duration of the training simulating a search deployment.
Prerequisite Training: Students attending this class must have completed the NC-8100 Land Search Field
Team Member class, ICS-200, ICS-300, NC-8148 (Wilderness Land Navigation), NC- 8120 (Man Tracking-Basic Fundamentals for SAR) or NC-8122 (Man Tracking- Tactical Tracking Operations for SAR, Wilderness First Aid.
1. Understand Leadership for SAR Operations, Leadership Principles and Traits, Decision making Process and Troop leading Procedures.
2. Familiarization with the different types of resources used for SAR Operations.
3. Provide Leadership necessary to effectively coordinate work efforts of others to find lost person( s ).
4i To affect an efficient utilization of time and resources.
5. Provide a Systematic Approach to Mission Planning, Execution, and Post Mission Activities.
6. Demonstrate the ability to Navigate accurately on land, both day and night, route planning, and setting up a phone for SARTopo tracking.
7. Demonstrate all Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSA) from NC-8100 in the conduct of the PRI-8200 course.
8. Demonstrate use of and understanding of JCS forms and Incident Management Team (IMT) procedures
9. Demonstrate search tactics and techniques, and Theory for Initial Actions and Reflex Tasking.
10. Demonstrate an understanding of the Functional Groups for Reflex Tasking.
11i Demonstrate Team/Task Force control measures while conducting various SAR missions.
Lecture / Demonstration I Practical Exercise with overnight stay and a written test. Students will be required to stay in a shelter for the duration of the training. Training will be 24 hours every day with student rotating in and out of leadership positions. Additional course information will be presented on day one of the training.
Materials Required: Helmet, Eye protection, long pants, shirt, gloves with leather palms, boots with ankle support. Pen or pencil / Note Pad / Flashlight/ Flagging Tape, water and snacks, suitable clothing for the weather, SAR 24-hr pack. Food and water, to last through the three days of training.
Students must be 18 years or older and all students will sign a land use waiver .
